I thought I would share my first two engraving projects. They were a hit with the grand kids. Both were done with a diamond drag tool

WOW!!!! Can't wait to see what you come up with when you figure out what you're doing
Great work Dan. The grand kids are very lucky to have such a creative grandpa.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: First Engraved Signs
The nice part about using a diamond drag bit, is that you can use the cheap acrylic sheets. I flip the image and carve on the back. Looks great from the front. I got the "OPTIX 0.08-in x 8-in x 10-in Clear Acrylic Sheet" from Lowe's pretty cheap. https://www.lowes.com/pd/OPTIX-0-08-in- ... et/3143395. I just made some Easter ones for the grandkids.

That’s great. Just ordered my cnc yesterday. I have no experience. Hope I can do that well someday.

Re: First Engraved Signs
Is the .08 not to thin. Some how in your picture I see that it looks thicker.
Yours look good and seem to transmit the light very well

Re: First Engraved Signs
I purchased the acrylic pieces at a local glass shop. They told me that the material was 1/4” but it actually measured 0.21” thick. I tried a piece of thin acrylic from Lowes but the light from the LED strip did not show up very well. It did engrave ok.

Re: First Engraved Signs
The thickness when it comes to acrylic is a nominal value & you should always measure it, the actual thickness of 1/4" acrylic can vary quite a bit either way, cast acrylic thickness will vary more than extruded but cast is a better material for this sort of work & there is next to no difference in price between the 2 these days, well not in the UK anyway
Probably a personal thing but I don't like to see them on thin materials, to me they just look cheap & since the difference in price (per panel) is quite small I would rather use a thicker piece of acrylic rather than save a few pence (or Cents in your case )
Most of mine are done on 8mm acrylic, have done some on 6mm but prefer the 8mm & the 8mm also sits better on the LED strip as it's closer to the width. I also tend to use the 50.50 x 300 LED's per metre as they are brighter & I think give a better overall look.
