Ritz cracker channel in rectangular wood

Post by fogbow »

cracker.png
Still a relative newbie here. Been doing CNC part time when I can for a few months. I mostly make cutting boards and simple signs. I would like to make a round cracker channel in 3"x3"x12" and leave the end piece on so the crackers don't fall out. I thought of a fluting toolpath but I'm not sure that's what I need. I really just want to do the channel and leave the outside rectangular. Something like the picture, simple but made of wood.

Thanks in advance.

The Molding Toolpath would be a good choice..

Use a series of parallel vectors, approximately 1/16" apart with the fluting toolpath if you are using a 1/4" end mill. Note that the vectors nee to be 1/4" shorter than the width of the channel, since the fluting toolpath defines the path of the center of the end of the end mill. Also, you will end up with a 1/4" flat at the bottom of the channel rather than a perfect half circle.

The fluting toolpath tends to create more of a parabolic curve than a true circular arc. In this case the moulding toolpath would be the tool to give the best results. That, or 3D modeling it.

Thanks both Mike's. Fix It Mike what does your array copy page look like? I keep doing something wrong.

I'm soaking in all this information. Seems like there are always three or four good ways to do what needs doing! I've watched all the tutorials numerous times but until you need that precise information it's hard to retain. How would you go about 3D modeling it 4D thinker?

I used a horizontal line, 1 3/4" long with a 1/4" end mill to make a 2" wide cavity.
176 rows
1 column
Offset
X: 0.0 Y:.0625
Row/Column Displacement X:0.0 Y:0.0

Original line was at the bottom, and after making the array I selected all and used the Align tool to center the vectors on the material.

Take a look at this file... The Molding Toolpath
Maybe it'll help.

If you want to 3D it..Create the outline vectors and then make a component, Dome shape, Subtract..
See attached picture...

Do you want the pocket to have a rounded bottom or a flat bottom (ooeer matron!)

Think I'd rather it have a rounded bottom. Anybody got a Ritz cracker they can measure? I only have square saltines.

My Bacon flavor Ritz crackers measure 0.21" thick by 1.91" diameter.

Bacon flavor accounts for the 0.035 difference, mine were plain and I use a tape measure not calipers.

Why couldn't one use a bowl bottom bit and just tool path it? It could still be cut as 3D raster by making a 3D finishing toolpath from a toolpath preview component.
