from what I have read you don't want to plunge right into the piece of brass
best to come in from side
in aspire and running a shark HD, how do I tell the toolpath to come in where I want it to

Use ramps and leads. Make sure you have Show advanced toolpath options checked at the top of the toolpath dialog.
