How much is not enough

Post by RhoTu »

I'm looking to do some 3d carving in some thin material, 0.01563, nickel silver , brass or silicon bronze. Similar to real engraving.

If I was to use a model, say one of the corner flourishes, what height and what size bit would give me reasonable detail? I know this is a rather complex subject but am looking for some advice/opinions from some of you who have experience dealing in this kind of size before I spend hours and dollars screwing things up.

I could increase the thickness of the material slightly, maybe 0.010 but I need to keep it at a minimum and keep structural integrity as well. Any advice appreciated.

I suppose "3d carving" means V-carving? What is the size of your carving and the space between 2 curves? It will define the Z depth you require, which needs to be less than the height of your material. The Z resolution and precision of your machine has to be way better than this value.

There are also a lot of other issues.

If I had to do this kind of job, I'd machine an embrossing plate.
Best regards
