Setting Zero in Aspire for Axiom Pro Need Help
Setting Zero in Aspire for Axiom Pro Need Help
I am setting up a new Axiom Pro 8 and want to fly cut the surface. How do I set the Z zero in Aspire so I don't destroy the MDF. If i use the puck to do the tool set when i run the program the bit does not come down far enough. How do I get Aspire to correct for the puck height and get the cutting bit so it doesn't cut too deeply into the MDF.
I know this is probably very easy but I am at a loss. Do i have to set the zero in the machine or in Aspire. I don't want to replace the MDF because i cut to deeply.

You will set the z zero to the Top of the material in Aspire. (This equates to the top of your MDF spoilboard). You then create a pocket that covers the material and set depth of cut to whatever is suitable to mill your spoilboard flat.
As far as your router bit not reaching the z zero puck, I can't help you with that. One thing comes to mind - is your z depth of travel bottoming out before the bit can touch the puck? Is there a setting on your control software to extend that distance or do you need to increase the thickness of your spoilboard material to enable the bit to reach the puck?
Perhaps Axiom has a User Forum where you can ask questions specific to your machine.

Re: Setting Zero in Aspire for Axiom Pro Need Help
bob...
follow these steps:
make sure your design file has the zzero set to "top of material" (in job or material setup)
use the puck to set your zzero to top of spoilboard
if the bit wont reach the puck slide it out of the collet
Once z is zeroed, move the bit down and make sure it will touch the surface
if the bit wont reach the spoilboard slide it out of the collet
If you have to slide bit out in either case above, rezero the z using the puck
Run your file
This does not use RichAuto controller, but the steps are the same:

I can use the puck to set Z axis zero. The bit can reach the top of material, but the top of material after tool set is -25.4 mm (1 in). When i run the machine the bit is above the MDF.
What do i need to do to get the bit to lower to the surface.
My confusion is tool set with the puck and top of material is 1 in apart.

Not sure how the Axiom handles setting the puck thickness but on my Shark it is set in the controller program and not Aspire. Did you check the control program that the Axiom uses?

It does sound like the stored value for the puck thickness is either missing or incorrect. You may want to post this on the Axiom forum on how to correct.

Got it figured out. The puck thickness is a reference. once you use it to tool set zero you have a top of material at -25.4 mm (1 in.) You then have to lower the bit 25.4 mm and reset the z-axis to 0. That solved it.
Oh the joys of learning a new machine and software at the same time.

Time to learn a little more. There is a setting that allows for the puck thickness. You shouldn't have to move the bit to zero after the zzero routine is complete. Put an email into Chad at Axiom support, he will hook you up.

From some Axiom Tool Group Postings:
Setting puck thickness
Post by Axiom Tool Group on Nov 11, 2016 at 11:31am
In the MENU, select the MACHINE SETUP. There you'll see a listing called C.A.D. Thickness.
You can change the setting here. Just be sure to measure the new puck as accurately as possible.
Setting Puck Touch Off Speed

The touch off speed can be adjusted in the Auto Pro Setup menu.
Press MENU
Select Auto Pro Setup
Press OK
Scroll to find Toolset Speed
Press OK
Press RUN/PAUSE DELETE to enter a new number
Enter the number
Press OK
Press OK
Press Stop/Cancel
Press Stop/Cancel
The default number is 600 - way too fast - I set mine to 150 - very smooth and easy touch off. You can try
different values to get the touch off speed you like.
==================================================
I tried the 150 setting. Nice speed. It's now my normal touch speed. If you didn't guess, I'm a new Axiom AR8 Pro+ owner
