Clear Exterior Finish

Post by GarySeibs »

Redwood 2.2.png
Hi all,

I am looking for a recommendation for a clear exterior finish on a slab of redwood. This is the second (and last) incarnation of this particular carving. My friend had this beautiful slab of redwood that I carved this verse into, he painted it and put it out front of his house. The sun and weather made it faded and gray like redwood does and he's wanting to preserve it. If it were mine, I would keep it indoors and the problem is solved.

On similar interior projects I will shoot a seal coat of lacquer to keep the paint from bleeding, paint, sand and then topcoat with more lacquer to finish. I have little experience with exterior type finishes that will perform preserve but work like interior lacquers or finishes. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

I've used Deft Oil and Cabots Natural Oil with success.
