Wall Texture Panels and Finishes

Post by RebeccaJ »

Hey All!

Just after some advice really, I'm planning on creating a texture wall for our dining room and well I haven't done anything like this before and so I thought I'd ask on here!
For anyone that has successfully created textured wall panels, what materials did you use, and what finishing did you apply?
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated before I embark on my next personal project!

Thank you in advance!

I haven't done any properly textured ones as such but I did some faux wainscott beading panels using 6mm moisture resistant MDF (the green stuff) finished with eggshell paint. I would think the same would work or textured panels provided the texture doesn't go too deep.

I have used just regular MDF and then sealed it for a few

I use moisture resistant in the thinner sizes as, in the UK at least, the thinner sizes tend to resemble cardboard rather than a wood based product at times. The MR grades always rout better and don't absorb so much paint or sealer.

In the US there is a few brands of MDF that are "double refined". Not sure if it's available in the UK. It tends to be solid all the way through and can be routed and sanded without raising lots of fibers.

Regular MDF is often fluffy in the middle and hard to sand and finish. I've had this problem with some moisture resistant varieties of MDF as well. If you can get Medex in the UK (a particular variety of moisture resistant MDF), it machines very nicely.

It's Medite over here but I think it's the same process and it's what I use all the time as it machines so well.
