Torus Knot

Post by Soapyjoe »

torus-knot.jpg
Some years ago I made a simple torus from sections of different hardwoods which now sits on my mantelpiece... it always looks good

I have been thinking, for quite some time, how to make a twisted torus or a torus knot .... similar to illustration but not necessarily exactly like this... a simple form would be nice

But the mathematics fail me.

To my mind it would have to be constructed from circular sections of various woods, cut very accurately, to the required angles.

Any ideas?

Thanks Adrian,

That's the general idea

Machining the twisted components presents some challenges.

My idea was a very much smaller model but with a gradual twist to each component

Can't help with the designing process, but my dad used to make wooden chains.
He would machine the individual link then snap the link where the wood naturally wanted to break.
This allowed the links to be looped together and the broken link glued back together.
Because the link was broken rather than cut, you couldn't see the join anywhere in the chain.
Just thought you may be able to use the technique.

Hi Everybody

Another image of the sort of things that I wish to make.

I just wish for some guidance as to where I can find the maths for doing this sort of exercise.

The twisted torus can be made using the two rail sweep and several cross sections.
This might help http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... e+triangle

One of the free Vectric projects is a wooden chain that uses that technique.
