Spin to double sided

Post by gkas »

I've been playing with Aspire trying to create 3D stuff to prep for upgrading from Vcarve Pro. . I don't often need to create spindles, etc., so I don't have a lathe. I thought I could get around getting a 4th axis if I could create a spindle using 'spin a vector' with Aspire modeling and 'double sided' to carve it. Is this possible?

As far as I get is to spin a cylinder and carve it on one side of the double sided carve. I can't get the cylinder to show on the 2nd side. Is it possible to create the second side and carve it? Is there a better way?

The spin tool only makes one side you would need to make the other side and glue them together. To turn a spindle in one piece you would need the 4th axis and use the wrap gadget.

Have you tried using the Molding Toolpath in a Wrapped job ??
It works really well.

I was wondering if that was possible. I'll give it a try and see what I can come up with. Be prepared for more questions :D

Has anyone done any examples of any spindles machined in this way .... only using the double sided method... I have only seen Ash trays or dishes... There all good! but just wondering if anone has done chair legs? Just wondering how good 3 axis machines to the side?

Not a chair leg, but the principle is exactly the same. One half of the spindle was modeled in Aspire, two-halves for each spindle was machined on a CarveWright CNC, then the halves glued together. However, if the material is thick enough, then a double-sided carve can easily be done with no glue-up of two halves required. This material was only 0.75"-thick. If I had used 1.5"-thick material, the "half carves" would not have been necessary.

Mr.Tyler
Thanks for the explanation of making a spindle with 2 side carve with the spin and modeling tools. I just didn’t .
give it enough though. His show.you what a powerful tool this forum is
