it should work as advertised as a base coat before priming and painting
That is what they do for foam board surfboards. I make classic kick panels, door panels molds for vacuforming and other stuff that way. I use the smooth-on product called "epoxy agent" in red or grey or another product called "epsilon" an eps foam coating. I use a grayco airless spray gun with a .23 tip for laytex painting to spray the epoxy after thinning a bit with denatured alcohol, which you really don't need in a grayco but I was using a cheap $18.00, 2.2 tip, harbor freight spray gun for a couple of years before I found the grayco.
look in pawn shops to find a cheaper one. Mine cost 100.00 used and I got 3 tips with it. it sprays out great, smooth as silk after a try or 2 (test on scrap till you are happy with your test pattern) after curing it's a prime and paint with minimal surface smoothing (usually operator error) and you use 1/2 the amount than brushing it on.
