Corian outside durability

Post by dwilli9013 »

Quick question. I did a search and did not find info on this.

Can anyone tell me how Corian weathers outside.
Thinking of making some address plaques out of Corian but don't want to come home and find the material dropping down the side of my house.

Temperature wise they should do OK. The high end temp for Corian is over 300°F. If it gets that hot around your house, don't invite me over :D :D :D

The question I don't have an answer for is UV. I don't know if Corian will withstand UV very well.

Update: Here's what Dupont has to say, they still don't address UV though.... http://www.corian.com/corian-r-technique-outdoor-spaces and this http://www.corian.com/IMG/pdf/k-27409_c ... corian.pdf

Yes, Corian is UV stable and Dupont has an idea page that shows entire exterior kitchens and cladding using Corian.
It is used for signage, play sets, embellishments, etc.

We have used Corian for address signs for many years and they hold up very well. Some of the darker colors can change their color slightly, however, a cleaning or sanding will revive the original color.
It doesn't melt, but it can be formed using an oven at 350 degrees until it softens. The time will vary based on size and thickness.
Corian, along with any other solid surface, is very nice to work with and finishes easily. It holds detail very well, but when machining it, the chips cling to everything from the static generated.
A good dust collection system helps greatly.

Pink and blue foam have the same problem. Wiping down the CNC with dryer sheets before & after machining helps.

It actually cuts and engraves pretty nicely with a laser [DC CO2] too. My 130w will cut 1/2" but pretty slow- .25 works well. Gene

I made a sign at the end of the drive to my house using corian and epoxy alloy wheel paint nearly 10 years ago now. It still looks like new and I've never even cleaned it. Wonderful stuff.

I have made quite a few address plates out of corian, years later they look the same.

That the corian itself, whatever you use to fill the letters may be a different story, I usually use epoxy which also stands up well but will fade and warp eventually if exposed to alot of UV.

Hmmm I am wondering how fiberglass resin would hold up for the lettering.

For something relatively simple like address plates, best option for fill might be corian itself via inlay of contrasting colors.

Have made a few of those, looks sharp and professional, unique and no worry about UV. Downside is you are limited to simple letter/number designs without quite an effort, and wastage of material.

Material is my issue it is a bear to find around Rockford Illinois but I was able to purchase some from another forum member. So that will get me going. Might experiment a bit to see what works.
And my stuff will be basic address plaques to start and go from there.

I am blessed, I have loads of corian obtained dirt cheap.
I did one with blue and white, 1st attempt was a while ago

Worth a thought, I wouldn't go with epoxy for fill if its exposed to direct sunlight.

You can use a marine grade polyurethane.
