Perpendicular Lines

Post by sylvan356 »

I am having a senior moment. Can anyone tell me how to draw a perpendicular (90 degree) line from an existing line that is not parallel with the x or y axis? Thanks!

Hi. not an expert but you could draw your first line.
copy and paste another line on top of the original.
make active by selecting and use the rotate function and input 90 degrees
this will place a line at 90 degrees to your origional
You can then position this line wherever you want.
cheers alan :) :) :)

I presume you are looking to start at the mid-point of your existing line:

1. select "Draw Line / Polyline" tool.
2. move the cursor over the line until it changes to the mid-point snap (crosshair with "bullseye") then click to start the line.
3. extend your line out as close to perpendicular as you can until you see the perpendicular snap (circle with vector going into then out of the circle at an angle). Click to terminate the line where you want.

If you need to start from an arbitrary point on the line it looks like you have drawing at an end-point or the mid-point then move the line.

I wish the Vectric products had as rich a set of snaps as Rhinoceros does.

Copy the line onto itself; select the line, hit <CTRL>9 twice.

You can use 0 and 9 to rotate in 45 degree increments. The Ctrl key isn't needed.

Thanks, Adrian. Don't know why I've been using the <CTRL> key all this time.

You could node edit and align the nodes with - select the nodes on the ends of the lines - then align with pressing "X" for vertical or "Y" for horizontal.

Have crossing lines - align one as vertical and the other as horizontal. trim away what you don't want.

You could also rotate a guide line to any angle you wish, position the guideline at the desired intersection location, then draw the line on top of the guideline
