As ger21 mentioned, use a water based poly or lacquer to maintain the color. Some WB finishes will be tinted to mimic oil based finishes.

General Finishes Enduro line is fast drying and easy to work with.

I didn't know about this as I said in a previous post, had a look at a couple of clear water based finishes today to see if there was anything written on them which may indicate this but couldn't see anything at all. Is there a way you can tell other than just try every brand & see what works best for the work you are doing

They have professional water-based coatings of all kinds. Some can be tinted.

I have their EM6000 in both gloss and satin. Premium coatings (and a premium price too).

Most of their products are for spraying- but they have brushed as well.

You could try a soap finish ( https://blog.lostartpress.com/2016/05/1 ... s-it-like/ ).

I did some tests on ash (notorious for going urine coloured) years ago and it worked a treat.
