Layer drop down box in 8.5

Is there any way to enlarge the layer drop down box? I just upgraded from version 3.5 and don't like that I can't stretch this box like in the earlier version. Most of my sheets of material have 30 or so layers and I used to stretch that box open to make it easy to toggle back and forth between layers now I can only see a few at a time without scrolling. I can't even see the whole line without scrolling left to right.

There is a separate layer tab with more functionality than the quick access drop box in the later versions. I usually have that detached as floating panel when working on layers.
