Celtic Weave Creator and square curves

Post by randybic »

I'm using the Celtic Weave Creator in Aspire 8.02 and I just can not figure out how to get the curves to be more rounded. An example of the nice rounded curves is the Mantel that Quardo carved out:
http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... ic#p134410.

Am I not catching something in the Gadget, or do we have to manipulate the Gadget output with Node Editing.

I'll attach a snapshot of what I'm talking about.
The top picture is from Quardo's post and the bottom picture is my example.

Appreciate any help on this.
Thanks,
Randy

That is how the gadget creates it by default and there are no options to change it in the Vectric version. At the bottom of the Gadget window is a link to the original program's originator. His version may have a way to generate the rounded weave.

However, you can manually round them using node editing. See the attached example 6 x 12 weave vectors.

1. Create the weave in the row and column size that you want to use.
2. Ungroup the vectors.
3. Click the node edit tool and select the vectors one at a time ( there are more than one loop) and you will see three nodes that make the squared turns.
4. Hold the cursor on left and right node, press the "d" key to delete them. Keeping the center node as it is converts the squared turn into a rounded turn.
5. Repeat until you have rounded all of the turns.
6. The corner points can also be edited this way if you want to play with the shapes.

I've been a Celtic Knot nutcase since before this gadget was added to Aspire. I never questioned this before you brought it up. Looking at the nodes and deleting those two nodes did the trick. You can select all of the nodes on a loop that need deleting and do it all at one time too. Saves some time, but doing the example that I included one node at a time only took a couple of minutes.

Yes, I purchased the software when I made my first Paradise Box. Easy to use but is for Vcarve uses. The Aspire gadget generates vectors for 3D models. There are some others that I tried and had mixed success with.

If you look at my web page http://www.carveonecncwoodcraft.com/ the first photo is the one I used the Clanbadge software to make.

Love the knot work on that first one for Pat H!
Question: How do you paint that, spray it with black paint and then run it
through say a drum sander?

I've looked at the Clanbadge but I just haven't perused it as of yet. I'm using the celtic weave
from Aspire to work on a Wine box. I'll have to post something when I get it completed.

At the time I purchased it they didn't have the options they have now, but I ordered all of the vector type fonts. The one on that box is the so-called 3D font set. Once installed they appear in the VCP or Aspire font list. Each keyboard key places a vector on your project drawing. You move and rotate them to build the pattern you want to assemble. Positioning them accurately requires zooming in on them. The roundness is an illusion made with parallel vectors.

I spray two or three coats of polyurethane on the part to be cut and allow to fully dry. Then cut the design. Light sanding of the surface with fine sand paper to remove any burrs, then apply General Finishes Java gel stain sparingly to the whole area. Let it partially dry for a few minutes, then lightly wipe off the surface with folded paper towel with a drop or two of paint thinner on it. Damp, not wet. The gel stain will come off the surface and leave the dark roast coffee color in the cuts. It will take two or three wiping with clean paper. Done right, you will have very clean edges. No real precision work is involved.

When asked how I do that I tell them "with a $2,500 Chinese one hair artist's brush and many months of eye straining work". :)
