I think all your questions will be answered!

Thank you, Sylvan356. I assume this works on wood just as well.

Yes, it works on wood just as well. I did a video on this method 2 years ago, in which I secured a piece of 1/4" thick oak to my spoilboard, then ran a surfacing toolpath, then pocket toolpaths, inside and outside profile toolpaths, and drilling toolpaths, just to demonstrate that it will hold very well in all of those cases. (I was making some cigar box guitar pickup trim rings for a friend.) In over 2 years of using this mounting method, it's never failed me - not once. I use this method almost exclusively - I do still use screws on large panels, and fixtures for certain engraving operations.

One thing I will say, however, is that I do not like Scotch brand "Greener Masking Tape." The paper this tape is made of is so thin, it likes to shred when you go to remove it. I prefer to use the blue painter's tape, which is still a lot cheaper than double-sided tape, and in my opinion, more reliable.

Here a link to my video for those who are interested:

I would say that it is almost impossible to say that one method is better than the other, there are so many different types of double sided tape available with different types of adhesive & different levels of tack so unless you have tried them all which I doubt people have you can't really say the superglue method is better
I have a range of different double sided tapes that I use as a signmaker, some I would definitely not try with the cnc & some that I have tried with mixed results,
Couple of them worked well but these were not the cheapest of tapes so from a cost point of view the painters tape & superglue would be a better option it's not a method I have used very much though simply because of the type of work I do

I was taught that the best "anything" is the one that works for you. The tape and glue method works excellent for me. It's certainly not for everybody. If you're in a higher production environment than I am, it's too time consuming - I get that. For my home/hobby business, though, it gives me the best bang for the buck.

And you're right. I haven't tried every single double-sided tape out on the market. Since finding the tape and glue method, thankfully, I don't have to. It works, I like it, that's fine with me.

Mark I read through the whole thread so anything I have said isn't directed at your comments & it is also just my own personal opinion so who is to say that it is correct

I agree with you 100% what works best for some people doesn't work the best for others, stick with what works best for you & what you do  I don't do a lot of work on the CNC so far from a production environment but for what I do on it I tend to just need clamps & a couple of jigs for repeat jobs.

I only know what I do about double sided tapes because I used them quite a bit when I was working full time as a signmaker

Completely understood. I didn't mean to sound like I was being critical or overly-sensitive, either. I can see how you'd think that, based on my reply.

Today I accomplished several items in one interesting project.

1.) try out the glue and painter's tape for small wooden items without the use of tabs. (First Attempt)
2.) test my CNC machines accuracy and speed after three years of operation.
3.) create a project a newbie could run after setting up his/her CNC machine.
4.) a project that does not require a whole lot of time.
CNC Machine Test.png
This is the project - several different shapes at certain sizes.
2" Diameter Circle (Outside Cut)
2" X (Outside Cut)
4" Star (Outside Cut)
4" Square with .5" radiused external corners (Inside Cut)
2" Square (Outside Cut)
3" Tear Drop (Outside Cut)
2" 5 sided Hexagon (Outside Cut)

1/4" shank Bit Used: .125" diameter by 1" cutting length
Spindle Speed - 18915
Feed Rate - 71.41 inches/min
Plunge Rate - 35.9 inches/min
Pass Depth - .25
Number of passes - 3 per each item

Material Used: 3/4" thick premium pine
10 strips of painters tape
1 small tube of Crazy Glue

After first attempt of the painters tape and glue surprisingly the painters tape and glue process held the parts in place with no movement noted!!!
CNC Machine is performing very well even after three (3) years of operation.

My local Ace hardware did not stock the tapes that Scott described.

So I tried 3M Outdoor Carpet Tape and 3M No Residue Duct Tape. They held the material very well and came off both the project material and the spoilboard with no residue.

I didn't think the Blue-tape w/ Super glue was sound until I tried it. I was really impressed. I've been spacing the tape out now further and further apart, depends mostly on the size of the parts being cut. I use the 2" on the MDF spoilboard side, 1" on my wood material. I purchased some very small tips (amazon) to run a thin bead down the tape line and then press and hold for a solid min or two.

I have been really amazed how well this has worked.

i'll still use other methods as there is not one solution for all applications, but its sure nice to have this one in my options list, especially when I don't want to have tabs.

This is the best tape I've ever found and used.
It is intended for turning so it really holds.
To expedite release on thin parts use a few drops of MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) between the parts.
