Dust collecting shroud
Dust collecting shroud
Jay posted in another thread that he was in the process of fabricating one for his machine.
There are two distinct disadvantages to using a shroud
1. Lack of visibility while cutting
2. Slow down and extra steps changing bits
what does your shroud look like and how did you get around these problems, show us your designs.

dust shroud
hey kimon,
here is a pic of mine...
it was made for a regular router, not the "spindle"
that i am using, but it works great and if you look close you can see
the screws on the sides that allow you to move it up out of the way for easy
tool changes or different length bits !

I use this collet as well but it does have it's down sides.
it works great with 1/2 " tools but I find that collet inserts need to be allign correctly or they won't do up or hold properly.
If the locking cam hits one of the slots on the insert the locking cam can burr the insert and then it won't come out.
also the insert is only pressered on one point and after a while the inserts get badly marked.
I have a red mark on mine so i know where the cam is so i can allign the insert.
Regards
Bart

Here is my solution.
It's temporary made in MDF, and will be made in alu later.
The dust collector is always down on the material, and do not follow the Z-axis.
The Z-axis works independence and are tight with the rubber bellow.
When changing tool I just loose the screw at the top mount and turn it 180 degrees.

Kimon,
it all goes to what are your specific needs; operators that cut mostly sheet good for, say, cabinet will prefer different kind of foot than those who carve 3D and those who cut tiny parts.
Here something I've been linked to recently that really inspired me.
Here something else that a fellow Botters have came up with.
You can perform your own search on the Talk ShopBot forum, The MechMate forum and the CNC zone forum to find more ideas.

Here is one that I made for my large CNC Router that I am building.

I've been really thinking about this issue a lot. Thanks for starting the post. I've read in a few places that if your dust collection system is powerfull enough (tons of CFMs) you don't need the skirt. Anyone else find that to be true?
Take it easy.

i actually have a 1000cfm unit
dedicated only to the router with a 4" hose
and it certainly needs a shroud

Thanks for the info Coop. That's kinda what I was thinking was the case. I bought a 1400cfm cyclone dust collector for my shop and I'm going to hook that to the router but I had some serious doubts to the claims you didn't need a skirt.
Take it easy.

I built a CNC Router based on "Joe's machine" a few months ago. I don't remember the dust collection being part of the plans. Can you supply a drawing of what you have?

David - nice looking collector - what was the source of the brush material? The strip brush material I can find has a stiff metal retainer - not suitable for the curves. Suggestion for a source of flexble brush materail would be a great help.dacostad wrote:Here is one that I made for my large CNC Router that I am building.

mpblmb the two crv files needed are attached. It is cut in 0.5" HDPE.
The original drawings were from Joe and I created the tool paths.
Jeff E. The flexible brush was ordered from IMService at http://www.cadcamcadcam.com/index.asp?P ... ProdID=134
