Quick sign help needed

Post by Ed Lang »

I need to quickly make 10 signs that will be two color. Blue and Yellow. The text and graphic will be V-carved and the V-Carving needs to be Yellow with the surface, edges and back Blue.

I have limited materials available but hope to use MDF for the substrate and Latex paint for the color.

I am thinking the quickest process will be to paint the MDF, apply a paint mask, machine, spray or brush the Yellow and remove the mask.

If I use a paint mask, which one and where to get it?

Any suggestions?

I live about 60 miles West of Richmond VA and do not have any paint mask at my shop so this will need to be gotten tomorrow if possible.

The signs will be marking reserved parking spots for the sports season at a local High School. I am not charging for these signs, but still want a good job and something that will last this year without falling apart.

All suggestions and guidance is welcome.

Ed

Avery paint mask works very well as long as there isnt alot of fine detail in your design. Most sign suppliers have it in stock. Some people use shelf paper but from what I understand some brands work better than others. Mdf is not a good product for outdoor applications but If your only looking to get a year out of it maybe it will hold up that long, just be sure to seal it up as good as possible. I usually try to give my surface paint a full day to dry before v-carving and finishing.

update.

Sgns are doing great!

Cut Exteria and sand.
Prime with bin primer
spray yellow in the v-carved areas
use roller to apply background color of blue.

Pictures to follow.

No paint mask this time but maybe next.

Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear everything worked out for you. Having some paint mask around will probably come in handy. Post some pics of your finished signs.

Here is a link to one of the signs. I feel one more coat of blue and some touch up and it will be ready to go.

Here is another one I did this week. Solid Oak as requested.

Excellent looking signs Ed! Very clean looking lines between colors. With work like this you dont't need a paint mask but still do :D .
