1/2 inch to 1/8 inch collet.

Post by Wemme »

Hello.
Does anyone know where to get a collet to hold 1/8 tools in a 1/2 spindle?
All I can seem to find are 1/2 to 1/4
Regards
Bart

I use a ER11 collet from Craftsman Industries. You can buy it from MSC Direct.

Hope this helps.

Hi
A word of caution using split bushing is to line up the split in the bushing with a slit in the router collet. You will get maximum holding power that way. I didn’t do that once in a router table cutting .25 inch deep groove in .5 inch thick stock. I was only 8 inches into the cut when the bit popped out the top of the work piece.

Hi Chuck.
Do you use only the 1/8 collet or you have others you use often?

Bart

Bart,
I use an ER-16 x .5" dia. shaft collect holder in each of my 2 Z axis. They will handle .016"-.393" bits at a cost of approximately US$ 400.00 per set. In the future I will purchase the units mentioned by CRFultz since I never use a collet to hold anything larger than .25" & mostly .125" & they are about 25% of the cost of my current units. You may have to shorten the shaft length. Mine were case hardened, requiring a metal lathe, slow speeds, lots of coolant & carbide tool bits.
I went this route because I've had bits walk out of both .125" & .25" split sleeve adapters. The runout should be much less with the ER units which results in fewer broken small bits & cleaner cuts.

Hi Jeff Thanks for your comments I've broken a few 1/8 bits due runout and am look for other options and from what i've heard the ER11 might be the way to go.

Bart,
I have the the 1/4 - 1/8th and the 1/16....I use the 1/8th for most of the work.
I'm very pleased with it's performance. The chuck has a screw inside to use for depth ajustment if needed.
The one i bought was called a stubby chuck but it was still to long....so I wacked off the end with a chop saw.
The price about 3 years ago was around 45.00...I think there a bit more now.

Chuck
