Handgun Inlay Pattern

Post by JMOlshefski »

Any ideas/links to any hand gun patterns that I can use to create an inlay? Thanks

If you are looking for silhouettes, or outlines, do a Google search. It should show plenty of results and give you some choices.

You could also try a search on the forum, not something I have paid to much attention to as our gun laws are very different over this side of the pond but I have seen a few posts by people who do this sort of work.

Use Google search and type in "handgun silhouette images"

A couple of years ago I made a set of grips for a Lew Horton S&W 1911.

I used walnut for the grip but cut an inlay pocket for the Happy Dog clipart that comes with the software.

Used a very fine bit and cut the dog out of maple. Came out very nice.

What I did was just profile the dog out and glue him in. Then he was just part of the overall cutting of the grip.

IMHO checkering with a cnc router is less than optimum. About the only way I have made it work is to do the cutting very carefully and then give it a good dip in very thin shellac. Otherwise those little diamonds want to break off pretty easily. Probably works better with some of the really hard exotics.
