Countersink Gadget (Paul Rowntree) doesn't work in v10

Postby hdtom61 » Sun Sep 15, 2019 3:45 pm

Normally I use the Countersink Gadget from Paul Rowntree. It worked well under VCarve Pro 9.5. After the Update to v10 I can't use it: I'll get an error message.

How does other users realize countersinks with a normal endmill so that I don't have to change the tool when I want to mill a hole with a countersink at ist top end?

See here - viewtopic.php?p=70140#p70140

I expect Paul will update his gadgets soon though. Vectric updated their own gadgets and gadgets written by others (such as myself) that are on the "official" gadgets website but authors who host their own have to do their own updates to the new version.

Is there any information from Vectric about what exactly has been changed in the gadgets?
Maybe you can correct the programs yourself.

Hi All,

That gadget is a paid for one from Paul, and even it were free then I'm not sure we would have the right to make changes to the code he has generously provided and distribute it ourselves.

Having no access to the code means that this one is hard to debug, however the major breaking change for version 10 gadgets was that the tool database structure changed and the method that sets a default tool got broken. In our own gadgets we had a lot of code that looked like this:

Code: Select all
dialog:AddToolPicker("ToolChooseButton", "ToolNameField", options.default_toolname)

and changing it to something like this
Code: Select all
   dialog:AddToolPicker("ToolChooseButton", "ToolNameField", ToolDBId())

got it working again, if not exactly correctly. Just to be clear the key bit to search for is AddToolPicker, and the third argument getting changed is the main thing - it used to used to accept the name of a tool but now it needs a tool ID.

Hopefully this helps, but unfortunately the circumstances mean we can't be much more helpful.

Thanks,
Adam

Adam: Thank you for your help. but I'm not a Spezialist for coding.

In the meantime I've tried to contact Paul Rowtree by mail several times. Unfortunately I got no answer from him. So I think he isn't interested to update his Gadgets for the future.

Maybe in future update Vectric can add a function directly into Vcarve and Aspire, that we can realize countersinks with a normal endmill and we save at least one tool changing.

I think there are many users who are waiting for such a toolpath ;-)
