v carve advice

Hi All,

Would appreciate your advice regarding the carving on the text "Saxon" on the attached file.
My idea is to stack different species of timber say mahogany for the base and walnut for the swords and to resin fill the text.
The question is when carving the text do I use 2 toolpaths ? 1 for "Sa on" and a second for the "x" as this will need to be "project toolpath on 3D"
Then I will need to run the finish toolpath again to clean up the resin, this is my first project using resin so any advice would be appreciated.

I am certainly no expert... but my suggestion would be to leave out the 'X' completely. I don't have a 3D of the swords, so I just grabbed a general pic and threw it into vcarve, set a boundary and used a 1/8" to rough out the things. See attached pic. Perhaps you may not like that. I just think the 'X' carved into the swords would be a bit extreme.... imo.

We never stack text on top of graphics. Nor do we stack text on top of text.
Bad graphic idea. People can have a difficult time reading it.
It's sort of like trying to listen to someone talk with loud background music.

Guess I'm piling on here, but the other thought I had when reading your post was how do you plan to keep the resin from leaking out of the X on the carved swords after you pour it, especially if you do a "project on 3d model"?

I agree with you. Especially with stacked text on text. Even if the letters are painted a different color it still looks too busy. Seems to be a popular craze, requires some clever toolpathing and may show off one's skills but, IMHO, does little for what a sign is intended to do.

Stacked text signs do seem to sell very well. Lots of folks are taking advantage of this “fad” while it’s still popular.

I’m still waiting for macramé to make its comeback... Was good while it lasted!

(BTW, I really DO like stacked text plaques!)

I have a hard time seeing it as well. When it's too busy that you have to study it well think about it. Half of the folk won't see it and will move on to something else.

Did notice on the first pic with colored toolpath, that it looked to carve away part of the left hand hilt:(
Noticed on second one that you fixed it.
Might be a good idea to leave that toolpath colored,as with bit selected it looked like tight tolerances?
Looking forward to seeing it finished!
