Epoxy Inlay

Post by JMOlshefski »

I am trying to inlay some small lettering with black epoxy. I use v-carve, it cut fine and fills in fine, but when I sand down I lose some of the small details (dot above i for example) how can I increase the depth of the v-carve and what other alternatives are there?

Thanks
Joe

Add a start depth to the vcarve. If you set it to 0.05, then you can sand this much off with no harm.

You can also try a steeper angle bit for extra depth(for instance go from a 90* to a 60 or 45 degree bit), or sometimes checking the "Bold" option might help(?).
To save epoxy I've noticed people use various flat depths as well.
No epoxy experience, but the same problems can show up using Zank VInlays.

Use the kerning tool (Edit Text Spacing and Curve, middle icon 3rd row in Create Vectors). Click between letters to decrease gap, hold shift and click to increase gap. For bigger moves in either direction hold ctrl as well.

What font you select really depends on the job & the look you are after so not easy to recommend something
What I would say is use the toolpath preview to check how things will look, if you select a toolpath colour for the text then what you see on the screen is as close to what you are actually going to get as possible, providing everything else is done properly of course
