Need Help Getting carving to bottom of design curve
Need Help Getting carving to bottom of design curve
Can someone tell me the trick to getting my carved areas to go all the way down so the bit doesnt stop short and not get the sides like in the attached photos? Thank you for any directions.
Re: Need Help Getting carving to bottom of design curve
On the Toolpath Side, first check the Material Setup. Make sure the model is positioned correctly in the material and there are no errors. In the Toolpath, although it's been recommended to have a Boundary Offset at least 1/2 the diameter of the mill, I like to set it the SAME as the diameter of mill. It will take a little longer to machine, but it does a couple of things...clears out enough material to keep the mill from binding and also reaches the bottom of the material or goes pass the limit plane on a double-sided cut.
Looking at your example. it looks like you will see a setup problem.

The bit used will stay centered on the tool path line. Using a ball end bit on a steep curve the bit shape prevents Vcarve from going lower while centered. You could extend the profile vector a bit farther than half the diameter of the bit being used.
Unfortunately you can't "fix" the starting end the same way. If you extent it half the bit width you'll also need to move your drive rail over to where the profile vector would start relative to the workpiece.

4D Thinker are you saying redraw the vector profile completely or is there a way to do this in Vcarve? Gary I tried the boundary offset and still getting the same result, any other info would be very thankful

If you post the crv file someone here could probably help solve the issue.

Re: Need Help Getting carving to bottom of design curve
Without knowing the dimensions of your project, I've created this example of what I meant. I made the Profile curve 1/16" wider on each side of a section view I drew of the block. Then I added the Guide line which is 1/16" offset from the block edge. The Moulding toolpath was used. A 1/8" ball nose bit was specified, thus the 1/16" offsets.

Awesome guys,Thank you I had imported this as a 3ds drawing and trying to carve that way but the moulding tool path thing works great for this scenario.

Re: Need Help Getting carving to bottom of design curve
The material width is the same as the model no amount of boundary offset will work.
Increase the material width, center the model in the material and try again using a .5 boundary offset.
I'd also recommend using a boundary vector and use Selected Vector in the 3D toolpath instead of Model Boundary
