Toolpath preview speed

Post by kstrauss »

Previewing some toolpaths is very slow. I have set the preview quality to "standard", this computer is a middle speed i7 desktop system, the preview speed slider is to the far right. The estimated cut time for the attached file is a few minutes yet it takes perhaps 30 minutes to preview! Also, there appears to be no way to stop the preview once started. I'm using Vcarve Desktop 9.517 which I think is the latest version. What can I do to improve things?

You can stop a preview by clicking on the red X at the bottom of the view.

It appears that the "Hex375" toolpath is taking most of the time. One thing I noticed is that the depth of cut is only about 1/3 that of the Hex250 toolpath, so it will take about 3 times longer to complete all of the passes.
Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

1.0" Thick Material cutting at .030" at a time may take some time to cut even in the real world. HEX375

You can increase this depth for viewing/preview purposes but you must change them back if you are planning on cutting Aluminum 6061 as I suspect your are going to be cutting.

As Fix it Mike said you can stop the preview using the red x at the bottom of the window. Sometimes it takes a little bit for it to stop just be patient it will stop!

According to the timing estimates the Hex375 toolpath takes 44 second and that is close to the actual cut time.
Where is the "red x at the bottom of the window"? I don't see any such thing. There is a stop button on the slider below the View Selected Toolpath button.

After several years of using Cut2d and VCarve I never noticed the little red X. Thanks for the help!

It is a rather tiny 'red x', at the bottom of the window and it does only appear when you run any toolpath preview so it can be easily missed! :|

Glad we were able to help! 8)

The bigger the tool is in relation to the part being cut the slower the preview is due to the number of pixels being affected by the virtual cut.

It's not just about the processor, what have you got in the way of RAM & graphics card? Are you running 32bit or 64 bit operating system, 30mins is extremely slow especially with the preview set to standard.
I ran all the toolpaths in under 2 mins & I am sure there will be those who run them quicker than me
As Mike has said the hex375 takes the majority of that time.

The system is Win7-64bit, i7, 16GB RAM, somewhat recent ATI/AMD Radeon graphics card, Task Manager says no other active processes. I have vision challenges so this is on a large screen with the VCarve window perhaps 2500 pixels wide -- things are faster with a small, 1024x768 or so window.
