Stacked text

Post by ken whiklo »

In trying to copy the video on stacked text I get just the opposite result. My top text under the bottom text. What am I doing wrong?

Not to be a smart ass, but I did the same thing until I watched the video 3 times. I used MDF, so I wouldn't screw up a good piece of wood.
It takes some tome to get the cut order correct, but watching the video several times will provide you with great results.

I haven't got to the toolpaths yet. When I weld the two set of vectors together the top is on the bottom,

Change the layer names? To what? Renamed the top to bottom and the bottom to top, same result.

I’m not sure what Leo is referring to either. But, in any case, if you follow the steps exactly as laid out in the tutorial, it will work perfectly.

Review the tutorial and methodically follow each step as you go.

By same result I presume you mean:

Where? Where is the top text under the bottom text? What does it look like?
ken whiklo wrote:I haven't got to the toolpaths yet. When I weld the two set of vectors together the top is on the bottom,
You haven't created toolpaths so I suspect the "where" is in the 2D view. But there is no real top and bottom in the 2D view. One layer's vector will, when drawn, overlap another's---that, I believe, is controlled by the order listed in the layers pane.

How about an image of the bad result you are getting and a description of what you should be getting? Or maybe the CRV so we can see what you see?

It's so very important for the person asking the question to provide as much information to solve the problem as he or she can. That way the 4 people who have posted so far (and the others who merely looked) don't have to try an fathom what is being asked.

When I watched the tutorial on stacked text and Vectric was showing how to do the Grange Road they said to to make layer names with "bottom text" and "Top Text". As I was going through the tutorial I got mixed up and named the layers opposite what they should be. I changed the layer names and it all got clearer to me.

I am having trouble envisioning what the problem is that you are having. I know you said top text is on bottom and visa versa.

Problem is - we cannot really SEE the problem.

If you could post the .crv file we can look at what is really happening.

So here is the crv file with the names reversed from the way I thought they should go in the first place.

Your crv file has no toolpaths included, so I'm just guessing. Your toolpath layers for BOTTOM and TOP are reversed. You need to switch the layer names first. Then select the TOP layer and toolpath that from 0.00 to about 0.10 inches, then select the BOTTOM layer and toolpath it from 0.10 to about 0.20. Also, you need a border around the text.

The way I think of stacked test is this:
1. The top text toolpath carves the upper text just like you draw it. Don't worry about it.
2. The lower text toolpath carves the upper AND the lower text together. You don't want it to remove any of the upper text while it is carving the lower text . (This also means that if you use a V bit, the start depth for its toolpath is also 0. Otherwise, the "overhang" on the bit will cut into the upper text.)
Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

Looking at you CRV file I will go back to my original recommendation

Change the layer names

The combined "welded" text is the BOTTOM layer - not the top.
