Revert settings to default
I'm in charge of some computers with V-Carve Pro that are in a makerspace. V-Carve defaults get set to whatever the last person used, and this has become a real mess because people who haven't been trained on the software open it up and change stuff around, or people accidentally leave things with goofy settings.
So, if I were to make a script to restore to default settings, which files would I need to save and replace?
...and, no, locking untrained users out isn't an option (wish it was).

Not 100% sure if it's the same in the makerspace version but in the standard version all the defaults are stored in the Windows registry so you could save the registry sections you want and then just double click the file to return them to normal.
Might be worth emailing support@vectric.com to see if there is any easier way with the makerspace versions.

Yeah, I figured that it will be a matter of restoring the registry settings and copying over the tools tool_db file.
If only there was a setting I could set that didn't save defaults of every single thing.

Re: Revert settings to default
The default settings can be just as "goofy" as changed ones though. There are hardly any default settings I can think of that would apply to my jobs for example. If people mess things up because they haven't checked the settings before saving a file then that's a lesson learned. Checklists are a crucial step to using a CNC in my view.

I wonder if you can create a "Windows restore point" that has the VCarve install as you like it. Let a person do her thing. Then afterwards restore the system thus wiping out their changes.

Could you save a set of 'template' files that the clients open each time as opposed to starting a new drawing? I am not sure if you can make these read only so that they could not easily be mucked up by being overwritten in a save by a client. The blank template files would keep the default settings consistent.

Run VMware and clone a copy of the VM for each user. They user can have their own VM. You can put a password on each vm so users can't accidentally mess with it. .

A big issue is that I teach a class here. It's frustrating to try and reach on a computer where things are all jacked up.Adrian wrote:The default settings can be just as "goofy" as changed ones though. Virtual machines or restoring from ghost images before each class then. When I used to design systems and then teach users how to use them that's what I did so I was starting from a known point each time.

Re: Revert settings to default
You could have the computers set up with all the necessary CNC programs for your class as a designated User name and password just like lets say you have a single home computer with a family of six members. Now each member can have their own designated username and password for their access on that single computer thereby not messing with any other members files or programs. The Untrained user as you say would need the class Username and password Access in order to access the CNC files. Only the Trained and or Class User would have access to the CNC or class programs!
Example: Administrator Access versus Various User Access on same single computer
Now as far as The V-carve Program you can train your trained users to Restore the defaults in the program by going to Edit>Options when requester pops up click "Restore All Original Settings" upon leaving the program/class for the day.
Just some thoughts!
