Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Looked through Scrap of Oak firewood from Mom's woodpile, to see how much I had to cut off to get rid of Checking.
Saw the other reason I had thrown into the bin was a chainsaw "Touch" Haven't cut White oak since a FUZZY disaster in 2014.....Don't have more than 2 pieces in my stash...so cut other stuff.
Have an idea for the big section of White Oak of carpenter ant and dry rot section of the 2 yr old Oak for a Sketchfab Owl 4,
so figured it wouldn't be a Total waste of time to see how the partial dry rot cut while I had it out.
Stationary oscillating belt sander to the base and sides to 400G.
Then jigged it up and ran Roughing toolpaths with a 1mm TBN at 20% stepover and kept "Nudging the Z" down to see where the discoloration of the chainsaw Tap went.
Guesstimated where I'd wind up...and fairly good except roughing was at 90IPM, and tore out the top of the "Old Hippie "Les" " hat ...........
Started over today, by cleaning it off, and moving "Les" down -.1" Y..............

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Day 2,
Cleaned off, and recalced for new thickness, as I had "Nudged" Z down .55" to get a feel for the piece(Learned a lot about carving "Punk"!) Model is .41" height, so Rough toolpathed it again with 1mm TBN, with .015" allowance, at slightly lower feed.
Then stuck a "Butter" (Earthpaint Linseed/Beeswax 80/20) on pretty heavy, and hit with Masters heat gun(amazing how much Punk and sapwood reabsorbed mix as it cooled!)
Let wood cool to room temp, and stuck a .25mm Chinese .125" shank, .25mmR TBN in.....applied more LinWax mix to create a "Slurry"as it cut(will rub in after cut to fill pores like I do). Depends how Crazy I get, but .25mm TBN wasn't quite good enough in Preview for this 2.5" model on the Cricket/beard/nose/and details on his hat.
Will see how cut turns out in reality(ZOOMING in at max res, is NOT the same as naked eye:).
MAY go with the 9 hour cut for the details, BUT may be pushing White Oak capacity for fine detail?
No need to tell me I'm Crazy....I KNOW that!
(Now 33% done....but CF card was full)

Glad i learned on this Little one, rather than irreplaceable HUGE firewood piece!!

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Thanks Ed:)
Should have just pressed the bottom layer of slurry with the grain, and then LIGHTLY brushed off across the grain...and left alone overnight to harden a hair. BUT, had just received a call telling me my Noon call to Dad with the "Critter Report" on my backyard pond he likes so much every day, was the last coherent speech he had...and Hospice Nurse was on her way to see if Oxygen was just for comfort, OR an actual "Life saving measure" which is against Dad's wishes. She was going to spend the night as things were changing so rapidly.
Such a mad scramble from the clan to get up there, that my 2 brothers didn't think of picking me up until they were halfway across NH. Others were stuck in Orlando and Newark airports cancelling flights, and trying to fly to Burlington.
SO I BRUSHED the dickens out the carving in Every direction to get rid of a couple fuzzies, and all the slurry out of the fine details:( Think I'll leave "Old Hippie "Les" " just the way he is to remind me of this moment in time. GLAD Dad and I had time enough to say Everything we needed to say, and I had the last coherent talk with him about critters and carving this. White Oak is back on my list.

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Scott,
I burn firewood to heat my house. Cords and Cords of it through the years.
Just about every piece looks like it should be something special.
I have set aside maybe 1/2 cord of stuff that to me looks like it should NOT be burned.
I love all the stuff that you do. Even have a special medallion hanging in my shop as a reminder of the day you came to my shop - it was a special day.

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Mark,
I boosted the model height from .33 to .4".
Yep, Leo..That WAS a good day!!
So are we going to see you playing with it like myself, and a few ShopBotters?
Sometimes Curly and Birdseye get mixed in with the cordwood up here:)

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Scott, short answer is yes - but
Long answer is --- I will be retiring in 15 months, so, all my waking moments are pretty much dedicated to kitchen remodeling, siding, and larger home improvements projects. Also working on sideline paying jobs as well as working a full week.

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Yep Leo.....Funny how those "Practical" things get in the way of "Playing"
But it IS fun making pretty, useless things out of "Scrap"
My Aunt of the Walnut Branches keeps saying "Another day and those branches would have been thrown in the woods!...I should have Charged you:) "
Lots of places in a remodel to toss in some funky pieces, to get some "Oohs! " and "Aahs!" though!

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Thank you Dave!!
Always amazed by how few sawmills we have up here, and how uninformed the firewood guys are of the prices of Curly/Birdseye/and even Fiddleback figured hardwood is worth.
Most never even notice the difference.
Be NICE if they recognized it, and set aside for one of the portable sawmill guys to at least get it to the right people.
We STILL get most Hardwoods from the PA area:(

Re: Krazy...Thrown away scrap of Oak firewood
Hey Mark,
I went into it in more detail on the "Salvaged Wolves"thread;
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=31975
If that doesn't answer a specific question..ask again please.
Most local firewood here is cut/split/delivered in "Face Cords"(1/3 of a true cord..precut to 16" lengths)
Have to find a new friend that has cords delivered in Tree Length

Dad passed away peacefully at 3am.
Think this piece will stay just the way it is.
