You may want to take a saw and make a new cut?
Just checked that Birdseye Maple firewood I snagged from Libby's Camps, and they had cut to 18"(they go through 16 cord a year), and It was week in the shed (split) and another 4 days before I could seal it at home. Just checked, and had cut off all checking/cracks, and still have 16"+_ .25".

Mom's ratty White Oak was 16" and had been in her exposed wood pile for 2 yrs, and discoloration was gone in about 1/4", and one end checking disappeared at 1", and the other end at 2".

Black Walnut LIKES to check/split, and it was 4 days in August dry heat before I sealed it after cutting most checking and splits out...average was 1.5-2.5" cut off.

VERY important to seal all cuts ASAP.
Can't say about Manzanita, but worth a couple end cuts?

Thanks C.
I've been following your "Tudor Rose" project(was just waiting for a close-up pic of the Finish toolpath to chime in), and you're picking it up faster than I did. Keep going! :)

Thanks Brian! Just a little playing with the bark, and curving that straight line on the right(probably a fresh sharpened cabinet scraper), and it will be ready for more coats of LinWax.
Had a few people see it, and the loved the feel:)

So, I used to bring buttons or keyfobs for my Drs staff at Christmas...and then they always wanted to see what I'd been doing,but with Dad passing..I've forgotten for 6 months.
On my way out the door 10 days ago...I remembered....and snagged the Salvaged Wolves and jammed it in my pocket.
12.21.19 WOLVES FRONT FINAL COAT.jpg
Ladies Oohed and Aahed...and then the Dr walked in while one of the RNs was saying "You can SEE that they LOVE each other" and handed it to my Dr of 20 yrs....
He put on his glasses...turned it to and fro while rubbing it, and said "Scott....That's Beautiful..." with a sad smile(his wife is ailing)...
So I said "What do you want inscribed on the back for your wife?" THE SMILE :D :D "REALLY?"
So he scrawled it on the back of a paper towel...and I did it this morning.
Jigging something without a 90 degree anywhere took six tries before this Micky Mouse one worked:)

12.21.19 WOLVES BACK READY.jpg
Feels GOOD that a salvaged scrap of wood from a salvaged cut turned out special to someone!!!

I musta measured everything 6 times before the sun came up...and I STILL got part of his name in the dead center of a branch inclusion :(
(BUT STILL more legible than his scrawl on the paper towel:)

Onsrud 30 degree Engraving with a .005" flat...Z-Zeroed as normal, but because wood was flattened 2 yrs ago, the back wasn't flat...
So I raised Z-Zero .01"...carved all 5 separate toolpaths twice...and then inspected...and 3 toolpaths the Z had to be nudged down.001-.003"
Font heights went from .35-.17".

In front of a fan now as the final linseed/beeswax coat has now been brushed off...Mom will drop it off on Monday.

Already have another branch out to carve one for ME:)

Thanks both of you for the kind comments!
I cut Opals as well as wood, and believe in the old Carver's saying "People don't pick opals....Opals pick people"...I've seen people just tune out the world and get mesmerized :)
THAT'S when I know who it belongs too...My Doctor had the same look on his face :)
Kinda like when you you pick the "Perfect" present for someone...and it's opened...and for them the people in the room disappear, and the smile on their face!...Ya know ya done good :)
I've only managed it a dozen times in Wood......but it's what I live for:)
Thanks again...good comments here feel good as well:)
Happy Holidays to all!
scott
Oh...Monotype Corsiva "Walnut" was at .17" font height(smallest I've ever done that font)...If the sapwood hadn't shrunk more than the heartwood,and wood was flat...
I think I may have a new Teeny font:)

Love=.35" Lucida Calligraphy Bold
Jon= .25" Vladimir Script Bold
2020= .2" Vivaldi Bold
Scott= .18" Vladimir Script Bold
Walnut= .17" Monotype Corsiva Bold
But because Walnut back was skimmed wet, and shrunk unevenly as dried...Z-Zero was lifted .01"...cut, then dropped in thousandths until each was as good as compromise could do.
