Newbie Questions
I seem to be moving along ok between the on-line tutorials and the book, but two things have not clicked yet: When and for what purpose would I use the "Machine Base" for the Z zero start everything so far uses the "Material Surface"? Also everything seems to run right but I always get a "1 line error" on the pendant why?

Re: Newbie Questions
Where you set the z-zero position (base or surface) is personal preference really. If the material thickness you enter is accurate then there is no difference between the two.
Some machines (like mine) are setup with touch off points for the machine bed so the z-zero setting can be automatically done at the start of the toolpath therefore I always use the base setting but, if I used the surface touch off plate, there's no reason I couldn't zero the surface instead.
Might be a sweeping statement but from what I've seen most people here seem to use the surface setting.
