Shapes out of 8/4 Lumber
Shapes out of 8/4 Lumber
Hey all/
I recently purchased a Axiom Pro cnc and using Vcarve pro. I need to make some 18in round end grain cutting boards and I’m not sure what tool to purchase to make the cut. I’ll glue up a 19” square and need to cut that to 18” circle diameter. I see a lot of tools that are 4 inches long but not sure which is best for this.

From your description I am not sure why you need the 4" bit.
Are you cutting through two 8/4 boards at the same time?

I think you should be concerned with the cut height on the tool. Ideally you would have a cut height of 2.25 inches. But anything 2 or more inches will work. I know from experience the 2 inch cut height can be pricey. So shop around.

No not 2 at once but most the 4in bits say they have a cut depth of 2in, which is what I thought I needed

Don't forget as well that the tool needs to be longer than 4" as you have to allow for the shank in the collet. The tool supplier I use doesn't make any longer than 4" overall.

I don't understand how it can be a 1/2" shank & 1/2" cut AND have a .1 Degree angle. Other than that, the specs say it should work.Cmonnier wrote:Would this work :

I cut all kinds of shapes out of 1 1/2" thick lumber all the time and I use a standard 1/4" upcut endmill. The extra 1/2", if your material is truly 2" thick, might be a challenge, if even possible. I also have a Axiom pro.

Ok, I understand now. Another weird American thing that 8/4 lumber is actually 2" thick material. Roll on the day the 6% of the world that is holding out against the metric system gets on board.

Well, you'd think 8/4 would be 2" thick, but it's really 1 15/16"Adrian wrote:Ok, I understand now. Another weird American thing that 8/4 lumber is actually 2" thick material. Roll on the day the 6% of the world that is holding out against the metric system gets on board.

Re: Shapes out of 8/4 Lumber
I regularly cut 8/4 stock with a 1/2" end mill. The larger end mills give a better cut in hard woods. 1/2" is a nice compromise between good cut and lower cost (cheaper than 5/8 or 3/4 end mills). 3/8" will work in a pinch, but not as good a quality of cut. 1/4" will take too many passes and will flex too much in a 2" cut.

Re: Shapes out of 8/4 Lumber
8/4 is the rough dimension of the board so the finished size will be closer to 1.75" after planing.
