3D on corner moldings
3D on corner moldings
I am attempting to create some corner molding for a large cabinet. Each of the corner molding will be a 1/4 of a 4” round. On each of these 1/4’s I would like to inlay a 3D rosette. I am running version 9.5 and have the ability to create a rotary with the rosette, but don’t have a rotary CNC. Is it possible to carve these on a standard CNC?

Re: 3D on corner moldings
Uploading a picture and/or your file would really help, since I'm not clear what the rotary has to do with it.

Here is a shot of the corner round
I suppose I could treat the corner round as a flat and carve the .stl deep into the corner, however I am afraid of weakening the structure. My hope it to wrap the .stl on the surface of the rounded portion.

You can get the same effect without using a 'wrapped' job.
Just create the quarter round shape using a two rail sweep, then 'add' the .stl model to the shape you created. The stl will then follow the curve, the same as if you did a wrapped job, but you can simply machine it on your table.

I am using Vcarve Pro v9.5. I understand that a two rail sweep is only available in Aspire?
If I would create a molding Toolpath, could I then place the .stl?

No, you cannot. That’s because the Moulding Toolpath is not an actual model to have anything placed upon it!JeffWimer wrote:I am using Vcarve Pro v9.5. I understand that a two rail sweep is only available in Aspire?

Well, the most obvious would be to upgrade to Aspire. VCarve doesn't have any modeling tools, so...JeffWimer wrote:Mtylerfl, any suggestions on ho I might go about this?

I agree with Michael. If you plan on doing more of this type thing then upgrading to Aspire would make since. Jobs like this would be easy to do.
However, if this is a one off and you have no plans on creating other project that require 2.5D objects then you might look into having someone on the forum create the model for you.

Re: 3D on corner moldings
If I were doing this job as I understand it, I would generate the round 3D surface by using one of the tabs in the clip art files. I would resize the tab to match the diameter of the corner piece. The design could then be projected onto this surface. Or, combined with other components.
Is this idea totally off? It seems like it would work.
Andy posted a solution here: http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=28730 it could work for you.

Re: 3D on corner moldings
Didn't realize you were using V-carve Pro.
Definitely upgrade to Aspire if you plan on will be doing these on a regular basis. You need more than one model for this to work, and V-carve Pro only supports the import of a single model.
If it is just a one time thing, you could have someone make the models, bake it, export it as a .stl, and you could import it. But every time you needed to make a little change you'd have to go through the whole process with your friend again.

Thank you all for your help. This is a one off for my wife. Have to create some prototypes for her approval.
I just started ordering parts to build my rotary CNC, unfortunately it will take a while to build.

Re: 3D on corner moldings
Just as an alternative, I would make this using a "Compo" material.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_ornament
It could be painted or skillfully grained / stained to match the wood base material.

Just something to think about for the future.
