Need help with text inlay

Postby davidclark » Sun Feb 10, 2019 6:07 am

Hello everyone. I'm completely new to this forum, this being my first post. I could use some help with my current project.

I'm trying to inlay some text into a walnut end grain cutting board (the inlay will be end grain maple) and as you can see from the attached photograph, the results are not satisfactory. I can't figure out what's wrong. I am unable to change the size of the text, since it is part of a logo. The 3D preview looks fine. The post processor selected in VCarve is Shapeoko (inch). I load the resulting gcode into Carbide Motion to operate the CNC machine.

This is the hardware and software in use:
VCarve desktop 9.512
Carbide Motion 4.0.412.
7.5 degree V-bit (Freud 70-103)
Shapeoko XXL

I have attached the .crv file, and a photograph of the result which I cut into a piece of scrap end grain maple. I tried to upload the resulting gcode but evidentially that's not allowed.

My guess is that there is some incompatibility here and I hope someone is able to spot it and suggest a remedy.

David

It looks to me that there is an offset added to the the toolpaths somewhere. Possibly in the Carbide Motion settings.

're-zero' for the pocket

Postby Martin Reid » Sun Feb 10, 2019 9:11 am

Dear David

Just looking at the photo it looks to me like you should 'Z Zero' twice, once for the 'raise letters' and once for the 'pocket'

Sincerely and in good faith

David,
The file looks good,
[COM test file].jpg

BUT looked up your Bit, and it should be entered as an Engraving bit as there is a definite Flat at the tip(although I didn't see a dimension for the Flat anywhere, so you'll have to get the calipers out and measure the actual cut).

Looks like your cut is off by by the radius of the Flat, plus 7.5 degrees.

IF the Flat is more than say .01"(I've used and came out Great)....NOT sure it will work with a VCarved Inlay, BUT MAY be worth a test cut to be sure?

If the bit is according to the picture, then the total flat width is .056"

Thank you very much to everyone who responded to my request for help. Your comments prompted me to take a close look at the bit was using. It's broken! There is a small piece missing off the tip. I'm sure that would account for most of my problem. So now I need to order a replacement and give that code another try.
You guys are awesome.

Are you sure it's broken? As the others have said that bit doesn't come to a sharp point.
