Okay, let's see if I can do this...
Here's how I would approach this..
1. Copy / Paste the middle box.
2. Rotate the new box 45 degrees to make it horizontal.
3. Use the " Set Size" tool and in the "width " box add " /19" ,,make sure the "Link XY" box is not checked.
4. Hit "Apply
5. Mirror left ( or right ) 18 times
6. Group new boxes.
7. Rotate - 45 Degrees
8. F9, Center boxes within workspace..
9. Un-Group Boxes

That seems awfully tedious. How about one array copy with no gap?

Well, you know there are many ways to skin those cats!

Yet another method is select the box and drag while holding the Ctrl key (to make a copy while dragging) and Snap to the previous box. Repeat with multiple boxes selected until 18 copies are done.

I think it was Michael M who coined the phrase, “There are at least three ways to *fill-in-the-blank*.”

Excellent adze_cnc !! You found one of the three options / alternate ways to do this more efficiently.
My goal in teaching is to push people to think for other, more efficient / effective ways to accomplish the same end results.

So congrats, and lets see if someone else can find the other two alternatives to make it quicker..

Michael

PS, Thanks Michael T

Perhaps there are 4 ways? Is:

Mirror 1st box to get 2. Mirror those 2 to get 4. Mirror those 4 to get 8. Mirror those 8 to get 16. Mirror 1 box to get 17. Mirror 2 boxes to get 19.

one of your two alternatives?

Steven

PS. Perhaps, in the interest of teaching rather than just telling, the original step 5 could have been:

5. Your turn: there are at least 3 ways to make 19 boxes from this 1 box

Put one line vertical and one horizontal through your box. Then pick the vertical line hold control and pick horizontal line the cope along a vector 20 times. That will give you 18 lines inside the box. Then delete the 2 lines on either in of the box
It takes longer to explain than it takes to do it. I hope you can understand me explanation

There are loads of ways of doing it but a lot depends on whether the boxes need to be boxes or just vertical lines. Without knowing the toolpath to be used the end result it's a drawing rather than machining exercise.

I'd draw a line then copy/paste with a nudge and then use the Space Selection tool to space them out. Advantage of that way is you don't need to bother measuring anything. As with all these things which is the fastest way for each person is down to the tools they use the most. I use those tools many times a day every day so it would take me seconds that way. For someone else it could be tedious.
