I scanned a picture of a rear chair leg and can't figure out how to trace it. I used the trace bitmap tool but I can't get a single solid outline. Is there a trick? I played with the shading and parameters and this was the best I could do.

You deleted the bitmap from the crv file. The easiest and most accurate way is not trace, but to use the bitmap with the vector drawing tools.
Here I just used your trace and drew vectors. About 5 minutes....

This tutorial demonstrates how we can trace around characters on an imported image manually using the polyline tool and the smart cursor to create precise vectors. We then demonstrate two ways we can node edit those vectors to add curves that match the image.

Hello lostcreekwoodworking
You can download the latest version of VCarve by logging in to your V&Co. Portal account page.
I hope that this helps.
