create a circle with a square in the middle
i wan t to have a circle that has a square in the middle.
I want to pocket out between the circle and the square about .25 deep.
I want the square to have beveled edges to the depth of the pocket.
I tried vcarving and used a clearance tool for the pocket . it beveled the sides of the square ok ,but it also beveled the inter part of the circle which I want square edge.
So do I have to pocket between the square and then figure out to bevel the out side of the square.

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
One way would be to create another circle that is the bevel amount bigger than the final one. Use that one when creating the VCarve toolpath and then use the proper circle with a profile toolpath to get the square edge.

You could run a Profile toolpath ON the line of the square with the V bit. I'd probably run that before the pocket.

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
I guess that I need to ask another question.
By selecting the circle first and then the square and using vcarve and a clearance toolpath are the results I am getting correct,?
So is what you are saying is to create another circle in side of the first and run the vcarve set up to that circle and then select that circle and then the outer one and pocket that out last.?

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
Yes the results you are getting are correct. The inside of the square and the outside of the circles will be angled as that's what's a v-carve toolpath does.
Depends on how big the bevel from the v-carve is and how big your endmill is if you need to do another pocket or just a profile cut with the endmill.
It's the "new" outer circle that you would use in the v-carve toolpath and the "proper" one for the square edge cut. You're looking to machine the bevel from the v-carve away so you need material left to do that.
Another way would be to do a similar thing but reverse it so the start operation is a full pocket and then do a smaller v-carve cut with two squares.
Just experiment in the software. The preview will show you exactly what you're going to get.

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
I though it was something like this from the description. Having done it now the other suggestion from Gerry is the better one. Pocket between the circle and square and then do a profile cut on the line with a v-bit.

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
I want a circle pocket with 90 deg. edges .25 deep,
then in the middle I want a square has been pocketed around with beveled edges.
I saw a video that showed it being done using the vcarve function and the simulation showed the square with beveled edges and what looked like straight up and down on the circle edges
Must have not been a very go simulation

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
Do either of the pictures posted above match what you want? From what you're describing I'd say mine is correct as that has 90 degree edges and then a bevel on the square.
That was done by selecting the circle and square and creating a pocket toolpath. I then created a profile cut using a 90 degree v-bit with the cut depth set to be the same as the the pocket depth and set to be On the vector.
It can't be done with 90 degree edges with just the v-carve toolpath as that will always leave a bevelled edge.

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
I think he's talking about something like this. In my opinion, this can not be done using v-carve. It must become assembled out of two parts.

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
Key words - square POCKETED with beveled edgesI want a circle pocket with 90 deg. edges .25 deep,
then in the middle I want a square has been pocketed around with beveled edges.
Like this above?
.75 material thickness
.25 depth circle - Profile toolpath to .25 deep with .25 endmill
.25 depth Square in middle - A.) Profile toolpath to .25 deep with .25 endmill
B.) Profile Toopath ON with 45 degree chamfer bit (actually any degree bit you prefer would get you an angled wall of the square)
Interesting How you can get various results from one description!!!
Good Luck --- Let those chips fly!

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
This is a great example of how a picture posted with the original question can be so helpful
I have read the original post several times & I am still not 100% sure which one is correct
Key words - square POCKETED with beveled edges
sharkcutup, you may well be right but the problem especially with people new to the software is that they often use the wrong terminology simply because they don't know
I am still leaning towards Adrians example from the original post

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
Just to add, if Adrian suggestion is correct & the square needs to be a set size if you use ger21 method then you need to draw the square 0.5" bigger than the final size so when you run the profile pass to 0.25" deep it will remove 0.25 all the way round

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
Yep, a picture of the original idea would have made for a lot shorter thread. From the description I can think of at least four different ways it can be interpreted. Either way it's a fairly basis design that can be done in a couple of minutes in many different ways. This is really a time when the preview is your friend. You can experiment to your hearts content without wasting any material.

Re: create a circle with a square in the middle
OK Adrian your last post is what I am wanting to do. So I guess that it has to be a 2 step process.
I guess that the video I watched and the screen shot that was shown did not show the beveled edge on the in side of the circle.
Which is what I got on my simulation.
So question was and is answered.
Thanks. Jeff
