3D Dog STL Model

Post by cgav34 »

Does anyone know where I could obtain a 3D STL model of a Heeler/Australian Cattle Dog?

I'm trying to put together a project for a close friend who had to put her dog down recently, but I'm unable to find a 3D model of the breed of dog she had.

As an alternative, is there anyone here that is willing/able to create a 3D STL for me, based off the attached - just the dog, no grass or background? The Heeler sitting is actually her dog, but depending on how the project goes together, I might end up using the one standing instead.

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, the poses those STL models have just won't work with what I have in mind for the project.

You can alter the pose in any way you like during model import.

The real issue with using a full 3D model is whether you will be able to reduce the Z thickness without losing too much detail in the process. It is unlikely you would get a nice result due to the loss of detail.

Aspire has a tool called Emboss that is designed to “squish” a full 3D model for the purpose of relief carving. VCarve does not have that feature.

Lithophane would likely be far better and maybe easier than trying to cobble together a 3d setup

[hopefully can be done with vcarve, not sure]

Aspire and/or PhotoVCarve have the features for creating Lithophanes.

Nope. To do the litho in VCarve, a thin model would need to be created first. VCarve cannot do that since it has no model creation tools.

Ok, not affected personally as I have both aspire and photovcarve, but this is a vcarve forum so likely affects OP.

Could it import then complete a file made by aspire/pvc ?

Aspire model could be made and saved (STL, OBJ) then imported into VCarve.

The only way to get a litho or engraving from PhotoVCarve into VCarve is to create the Toolpaths in PVC, then import those Toolpaths into VCarve.

Ok thanks Mike, just tryin to help out the OP.
If he/she has never made a litho before probably would not want to do one on the fly anyhow, but thats hard to judge not knowing OP's experience level ect. Not that they are hard to do, alls it takes to get started is a chunk of corian and the proper software and tooling.

I've seen 1st try lithos looking as good or better than anything I have ever done, they are actually pretty easy but some tight tolerances to get them right.

Yes indeed! I love lithos...they look great, and as you mentioned, are easy to do with the appropriate software and tooling.

Thanks for the idea of a litho; however, she's mentioned before about wanting to call her homestead "Copper's Ridge", after her dog. I was going to carve a sign, kind of in the style of what Lazy River Studios does.

I've thought about a photo transfer onto wood, in the top, arched section of the sign, but I don't know...I just like the look of all carved a little better.

I only have 2.5 weeks until her birthday, so hopefully I can figure something out.
