Import Bitmap access from within VCarve Pro Gadget?

I am looking at writing a Gadget to take a BMP in VCarve Pro and making a toolpath suited to my laser. Using the Halftone Gadget as a reference, I realised that it uses the BMP as a 3D model and this can only be done is Aspire. Is there a way to access a BMP in a VCarve Pro Gadget to get pixel colour or brightness information? I can not find a way to do this.
