For my grandaughter

Post by jimalee »

hello I have a granddaughter who is very dear and close to my heart. She is blind and autistic, she is learning braille in school now. I would very much like to make her a special sign in braille. I have downloaded a font, but I need the font to be in 3d and rounded off. I would really appreciate any help you can give me. thank you in advance. I have attached the project I am working on.

Select the Modeling Tab at the bottom, then Under the Modeling Tools, the first icon will be create shape. Select all the vectors inside the long rectangle to apply the profile shape and height. Hit apply, then start a new component. Select the rectangle and use the bottom flat shape at a lower height.

Gary,

jimalee posted in the Vcarve section, so I guess he does not have the modelling tools.

jimalee,

here's a workaround to make the shapes in Vcarve: transform the text into curves. Select one dot to get its size. Use one of the domes in the clipart tab and resize it to the size of the dot. Than use the align tool to center it on the first dot. Copy-paste the dome and center the new dome on the next dot. Repeat until you have all the domes you need. You can then cut it with the 3d toolpaths.

Best regards

And another way:
Use a .0625 r point cutting round over bit to profile the circles.
Then use a .0625 (or other) end mill to pocket out the background.

Some good suggestions on solving a problem. Here's one more way to skin the cat...

There's a website https://touchsee.me/ You can type in the text you'd like to have converted to 3D braille, it will convert it, download the stl file and imported it into VCP.

Yes! Much more efficient than 3D, Bob.

Some more ideas for you.
I made these for a girl in my daughter-in-laws' spec ed class.

First is a "cheat sheet" for sighted people.
Second is large scale Braille made with Air Soft pellets imbedded in dimples. (Note the "W" doesn't follow the pattern as "W" didn't exist for Mssr. Braille.)
Last two are a set of blocks with tactile letters plus the Braille sign made with round-head sewing pins. Heads were snipped off and stuck into the block with superglue.
I used dimples 0.0313" dia. for the pin heads. The pin heads are within specs for official Braille dots.

Also know that there are commercial dots available to insert into dimples. Much quicker to cut.
