Cutting box joints

Post by cusoak »

I found a gadget that was done by a college student that will set up the allow you to cut box joints on the end of a piece of wood.
It can be used if your machine allows your router to cut beyond the front of the frame.
My Shapeoko xxl will do this.
It loads into the Vcarve pro gadget section.
It allows for straight bottom cuts.
There is a screen that opens and asks what thickness wood and what width, how many pins and what size what end mill.
Was there ever any tutorial done by vectric on this methed
I have the file and would be willing to share here, if that would help

Hi Jeff,

Is this something new? Maybe you can post some photos, or a web link, or further details about this.

Michael, this is the original thread that Jeff started about the gadget - http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... nt#p215570

Jeff, It's not a Vectric gadget so I would expect the writer of the gadget to do any tutorials/documentation for it.

Thank you, Adrian. I did see that before. I stumbled upon the original video about a year ago, as I recall. Thought maybe something new came along.

It loaded into vcarve pro as a gadget and opens there.
Has anyone at Vectric looked at it.
Has anyone here ever cut finger or box joints standing up outside the cnc.
Are their and other older post here that I could look at for more info on this.

I cut finger joints as well as tenons and whatever frequently, but I have a CNC that has nothing running under the bed and an opening in the cutting area so I can clamp parts vertically, or at any angle for that matter. My CNC is mounted on a base made from four 4x4s connected by wide stretchers, but no top on the base.

I don't use a gadget as finger joints are easy to lay out, and by laying them out myself I can make them uniquely spaced/shaped or ordinary soldier rows.

With an open bed and my clamping jig it is possible to cut almost any joinery challenge. If you are needing to do a lot of furniture joinery then I suggest you look for a small CNC with similar potential for clamping part vertically where the spindle can reach them.

Lots of people on the shopbot forums (talkshopbot.com) have done it with finger joint and dovetails standing up at the end of the machine.
