Machining Convex and Concave Sweeps

Post by Plas4u »

Hello there

Hoping for some advice to machine a profile I have not yet encountered. I have attached 2 files which were provided to me by the customer. All dimensions are in millimetres and essentially I need to machine a sweeping convex profile in an MDF block 400 x 400mm x 57mm thick and a concave sweeping profile and another block of the same size.

My thought process was to draw a series of concentric lines and create a tool path that moves out incrementally at different depths using a ball nose cutter cutting on those lines with minimal step over.

Does that sound right? Perhaps I am not explaining it well but the files should give you the gist.\ and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am running latest version of VCarve Pro.

Many thanks in advance. Michael.

Hello Michael,

I'm not sure of which tools are available in VCarve, so I will not answer on the method.

You'd better check with your customer what he is expecting. Some dimensions have 2 decimals: which allowance does he expects?

The sharp edges will be difficult to achieve and very brittle.
Best regards

Didier

I'd do both of them using the molding toolpath and a couple of profile toolpaths for the ledge cut and cutout.
