Chinese Characters as text option

Post by Mr.Chips »

On occasion I need to VCarve (engrave) Chinese characters in wood. Currently I have print it out on paper than scan it and save it as a .jpg file, then import the .JPG file into VCarve.

It would be much simpler if the Chinese characters were available in the Vcarve font list.

Has anyone done this, or could offer a better method that getting it into VCarve?

Thanks

HH

You will need to install your Chinese fonts via Windows (just like any other font) if you want the font to appear in the font list.

I’ve never looked into Chinese fonts and don’t know what is available nor how they are implemented from typing on an “English” keyboard. I’ll leave that up to you to investigate!

Pretty sure MS Word supports Chinese characters.
But an easier way would be to write whatever - translate in Google- copy - paste -save as pdf or image file

That’s what I’m trying to bypass.
Currently I type the Chinese characters, scan the page, save as a jpg file, then import that via a two step process into the VCarve screen.

If I could just generate the text in the Vcarve compose box like any other text that is my goal.

Thanks anyway

This may not be the simplest way, but it works.

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\fonts sub directory. Click on "Find a character".

Select the font then scroll through the characters until you find the character desired and double click on the character to place it in the "Characters to Copy" list. When finished adding to the list press the "Copy" button.

Now in VCP or Aspire open the Create Text. In the Text box press Ctrl-V to past the text. Make sure to select the same True Type Font.

Click Apply

Hope this makes since...

The Tahoma typeface that comes with Windows 10 has the Chinese character set mapped.
I used Translate.Google.com to translate the English phrase "Good Luck" into Chinese (Traditional)

I copied the characters and pasted them into the text window of my Vectric program selecting the Tahoma typeface.

There are even more cat-skinning methods! Windows has other Chinese fonts installed but are “mostly invisible” until certain Windows Language settings are changed. Too complicated to get into here, but a Google search or two will find the various “how-to” steps. I had no idea about Tahoma font being mapped to a Chinese font - that was a good find!
