v bit not touching work piece
v bit not touching work piece
Hi, I'm trying to v carve a design but the bit will not cut to the depth I set. It stays just above the work piece. I have been using v carve pro 8.5 and 9 for about a year. I mostly use it for carving with 1/8" end mill bit so I haven't done much v carving. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Re: v bit not touching work piece
Check that you're zeroing the bit correctly on your machine and that the z-zero position matches between VCarve and where you're setting it.
If you hover the mouse over the VCarve toolpath in the list it will tell you the maximum depth the toolpath should be cutting to.

Re: v bit not touching work piece
If you are attempting to VCarve on something you carved you will have to select "project on to model" at the bottom of the tool path screen for the V-bit tool.
Re: v bit not touching work piece
can you explain more when you say-- on something you carved you will have to select "project on to model" Do you mean a drawing I made? I think that may be where I'm having a problem/ I noticed text will cut a bit deeper than the design that I imported. Even though the depth is set the same. I'm trying to import a drawing I made and the v bit barely carves the design but it carves the text ok. Can I do anything to make the drawing more compatable?

If there are no copyright pieces in you project would you mind posting the file so we can see what you're trying to do. It would help.

Re: v bit not touching work piece
If you have carved a design and you wish to engrave text using vcarve you must project the text toolpath on to the model.
If you are using a vbit to carve an outline or shape use the profile tool path tool and set you depth.

A dog paw imported from a drawing. If I use an end mill bit, I dont have a problem carving in, although -say I set the depth at 1/8", it may not cut it to that depth. If I try an v carve it the v bit hardly touches it

Re: v bit not touching work piece
If it's not cutting to the depth you specify with a profile toolpath either then the issue is your z zero setting most likely. How are you setting z zero on your machine? After you set it tell the machine to move up and then back to zero. Is it in the right place?raye321 wrote:A dog paw imported from a drawing. The V-Carve toolpath is likely to be a lot shallower which would be why it's not touching compared to the profile cut.

Please post a copy of your .crv file here on the forum so that we may review your file. This would be a lot easier than guessing at your problem.
Here are a couple of my photos of using the V-Carve tool path.
If you post a copy of your file we can help you to achieve this type of results.

Re: v bit not touching work piece
I'd clean up the vectors for the paw. It's such a simple shape you'll get much better results by just drawing the shapes directly in VCarve. At the moment it's very broken up from the bitmap tracing and you won't get a consistent depth to the carve.
If you want the paw and the text raised rather than sunken you would need to select the outer rectangle vector as well as the paw and text.
There's nothing in that file that would account for the cutting depths problem you were talking about though.

Re: v bit not touching work piece
Is this what you are looking to do???
Take your paw vectors out and import this in its place. You may have to resize it the size you want.
Do as Adrian suggested if you want everything raised!

Yes that's what I"m looking to do. But how did you create it? Do I need to use the offset tool on the paw then hightlight the paw, text and outer rectangle?
