Hey all
I am looking for a 16th inch endmill with a length of cut of .5 inches. I am doing signs and at the size I am doing them I need to maintain detail in the letters and be able to cut to a depth of .5 inches. I can not find this anywhere. any suggestions?
Thank You
Ken

I know Tools Today carries a tapered 5.4º 1/16 EM with a 1" cutting edge (#46572). Probably doesn't help you if you need straight cut sides.

Re: Where to get an endmill
Toolstoday.com has a 1/16 EM but it is only has a 5/16" length cutting edge. This is not suffice if you are wanting to cut to .5 around letters/text.
I have a couple of questions:
How small are the letters/text are on the signs? If they are not very small or tightly kerned then you should be able to use a 1/8" EM which comes in a .8125" cut length for cleanup around the letters/text.
Why so deep on the letters/Text???
Of course this all comes down to the actual size of text being carved ---- 1.) you could always adjust the kerning (space between letters) to allow an end mill such as a 1/8" x .8125" to carve them qat the .5 depth you are requiring.

Look up drillman1 on ebay. He has loads of small bits, good quality, low prices, super service. I use many of his bits on a daily basis.

Re: Where to get an endmill
I was going to add Harvey Tool.
They ARE expensive but they ARE good quality.
1/16 at 1/2 long cut is going to break.
Can you consider something a little different - tapered end mill for instance, or a 1/8 diameter end mill?
Can you redesign the sign a tiny bit to accommodate a 1/8 End Mill?

Re: Where to get an endmill
I found some on Richards Micro Tool on amazon.
As far as the letters they are not the small they are about 1.5 inches tall but are slightly ornate. (I am at work so I don't have an example). I am cutting them out small desk top signs similar to these:
http://bieder.info/name-plate-for-desk/ ... -for-desk/
It really isn't a kerning issue as much as loosing some of the details in the letters when going from 1/8th to 1/16th. 1/8 has always been fine in the past but this time with the font I am using I am not happy with it. the signs I cut out are usually an exotic wood about .5 inches and then attached to a base. For the height of the letters .5 looks good for the thickness. I can always make it a little thinner; but .25 was just a little to thin.
thanks for all the help
Ken
