Box Creator Gadget

Post by jimtyzack »

Has anyone any experiencewith using this gadget to create simple boxes with square tabs NOT dovetails. The allowance setting doesn’t seem to do anything and the toolpath created does not generate a box which can be assembled. Help!?

I'm running into the same issue. The cuts don't fit, just a little bit to big.
I have tried allowance of .04 to .06 and it creates the tool paths, but does not appear they will fit if I cut them.

I have cut 2 different times and both did not fit without some sanding.

Have anybody managed to get the gadget to cut right?

What allowance are you using?

What bits are you using? A friend cut a small box out of 1/8” ply using a 1/16” end mill and it fit together fine, but I cut one in the same material with a 3/32” bit and had to file the sides of each tail (box joints) in all of the 4 boxes I made. We both are wondering what “allowance” means and what type of measurement (I.e. Decimal inch, %) goes in it.

FWIW, a lot of small diameter tooling is actually in mm sizes, and then sold as 1/8", 1/16", 1/32", etc. This is especially true of the very low-cost imported tooling found on Amazon. I've learned that each tooling source produces slightly different diameters for those nominal sizes, so I mic them all before entering them into the tool DB. This has significantly improved profile accuracy for me.

I used a 1/8 bit on 3/4 pine.

In aspire, is there anyway to set an offset if you are cutting on the line?
I see one for inside and outside the lines.

I'm trying to use the box creator gadget and getting the error "attempt to index field 'tool' (a nil value)" on line 1761. Sometimes I get the error "Couldn't arrange fast enough". Vcarve version 9.512.

You need to use the inside or outside and include the tool diameter in your offset calculations I would think but I haven't tested that. Cutting on the line the allowance has no way of knowing where you want the allowance applied.
