FWW article on epoxy inlay

Post by Phil »

The most recent issue of Fine Woodworking has an article on epoxy inlay that I thought would be of interest to forum members.

This is a well done article. We used to do this a number of years ago. Once you get the technique now it is a great addition to your product line. If you find one type of resin has problems with bubbles or shrinking try another brand. That cam make quite a difference.

I've used West System 105 with 207 hardener with great success, but I hear Ecopoxy is all the rage right now.

I'm curious about this. I've used epoxy putty with success, but this would be nice too. I'm wondering on a detailed carving, that isn't suitable for damming all the lines, other then more sanding, what would possibly be the outcome. Another thought, could you just run it through the planer and eliminate a lot of sanding.

I've planed it on the CNC, running the bit just a hair above the surface, then sanded it final flat. I sand it flat with 120 grit, then go to at least 220.

A flatbed sander is the weapon of choice here.
