ID wood
I have some wood that has been lying around for ages. I decided to use some for a project.
It is cutting very nice. I don't know what it is. Can anyone ID this wood. I tried to get a
picture of the end grain and a top view. If location helps I am in Seattle USA west coast

Re: ID wood
Doesn't look like Oak to me.
Maybe quarter sawn mahogany.

Re: ID wood
I have a bunch. I may take one or two to a local lumber yard and
see if I cam match it. It really is nice to work with.

Re: ID wood
My guess is African Mahogany. Low density, pinkish when cut, a bit stringy when sawn and often the grain changes direction making it a pain to plane.

Re: ID wood
It's some type of mahogany, but there are many types, and it's nearly impossible to know exactly which it is. The light color looks more like Lauan, as Gary said.

Not even close to white oak.

Re: ID wood
Looks like mahogany that I have been carving. Beautiful grain and is a semi hardwood.

Re: ID wood
I also think it is Meranti. Although it is frequently called Philippine mahogany, it isn't really a mahogany.
If it is meranti, it is relatively light weight and moderately soft. Quarter sawn pieces will often look like the semi precious gem tiger eye and will change color depending on the viewing angle.

Re: ID wood
I can never tell with a lot of these mahogany look alikes mind you I am not great with any wood identification lol I used to have a window company in the unit next to mine & although I was never sure exactly what it was I was collecting from their skip I could normally get a pretty good idea how it was going to machine by the weight. One of their fitters told me once that the stuff they were ripping out & throwing away was far better quality than the new stuff they were fitting
