closing open vectors

Post by blacksmithED »

I have a picture of a panda I drew and I want to have my pen shade in certain areas, for instance, the ears, but in the whole head.
Since the lines making up the ears are not connected to the head, they are open vectors. So, I can't fill them in using the engrave tool (my pen).

How can I join the ears to the head, and then how do I tell it to just fill in the ears and not the head.

Here's the file:

Check out the Node Editing tutorials on the Vectric website http://support.vectric.com/tips-and-tricks/select.php

You have to make each part a totally separate piece. Move lines to where they almost touch, but don't overlap.

See attached.

Simple answer is you need to do some more drawing

As signcut329 says in order to do what you want you need to make some separate parts

MOVE the ear vectors to to a new layer called ears
COPY the head vector to the ears layer
Turn off all layers but the ears layer. You should see something like this
Ears1.PNG
Use the Scissors tool to trim the vectors you don't need so you are just left with two closed vectors for the ears
ears2.PNG
Toolpath the ears separately from the head

OK, John. i viewed the tutorials. I hadn't seen them before. I just watched all the regular tutorials before. Informative.

signcut and martin, I see what you mean I need to do. This program works differently than node editing I used in the past on a 3D program.

rcnewcomb, That's a neat trick.

Thanks everyone. It's great to get answers to questions so fast. I get it now.

I just wish there was a way to join two vectors just by dragging a point over a line and dropping it on the line.

It can be a bit of a challenge if you have used something else in the past, I struggle a bit with node editing using Vectric software & although I am trying to learn how to use it properly I generally do all my node editing using my signmaking software which I have been using almost daily for many years. Having used it for so long I am quite proficient & generally whizz through any node editing I have to do, shame that it's not the same in the vectric software, would make my life so much easier

If you have watched the tutorials then you will see just how quick & easy it becomes once you have mastered it, sometimes think I must be one of those old dogs who can't learn new tricks
