A picture and a question ?
Here are 2 pictures 1 is the look as per Vectric Sim and the 2nd is cut in
MDF. The MDF may be hard to see but it came out very well. This was a
test cut so no finishing. I would like to cut this in a live edge board. I am
very limited as to what I can get and what I can afford. I looked online
and the best price is for basswood sold on Amazon and Michael's and Ebay.
The only problem is the size is not what I need. So I can join boards but loose
out on the live edge. I see people have simulated live edge using moulding
tool paths any tutorials on doing this.My glue would be about 13 x 16.

Have you checked around your area for small lumber mills? They would be more apt to have some pieces you'd like. Norm

Re: A picture and a question ?
Not something I have tried myself but can't you cut a piece with live edges & glue a piece in the middle so you keep the 2 live edges
Clamping might be a bit awkward but I am sure there must be a way to do it

Re: A picture and a question ?
If you cut the live edge off one side of each board then glue them together wouldn't that work for you?
Here's a good thread on creating a live edge.... http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... ge#p203788
By the way, I really like how the design came out...

Re: A picture and a question ?
I'm fortunate that I have three national hardwood suppliers in Salt Lake City which is near my home. MacBeath Hardwood, where you can buy online http://www.macbeath.com , Intermountain Lumber, which has a store in Seattle, which may be by your location, http://intermountainwood.com , and National Wood Products. These places you can get full length lumber, in several thickness, for a whole lot cheaper prices than what you're seeing on Amazon and Michaels and may work out better. They will sell from a single board to a semi-truck load.

Re: A picture and a question ?
Where to start they are all good ideas.
Split and add to middle. This I will try.
Well if I can't find a sawmill in Seattle and surrounding places
I am bad.
Intermountain Lumber, which has a store in Seattle this one I
will look up.
Great help and if I can save the time of making a false live edge the better.
Thank You

Re: A picture and a question ?
Don,
Any particular reason you want Basswood?
I've known 2 people who have cut it, and neither was happy with it for machine cutting details.
Maybe search for live edge slab shorts..lots of cut offs out there.

I have used it in the past and I find it cuts fine. The only reason for using basswood is that is easilyscottp55 wrote:Don,

available locally. If I can find something reasonable price I would use it. The big thing right now
Is to find something available and inexpensive . I will look for what you say cut off and short slabs.

Re: A picture and a question ?
Up here it's imported mainly for the handcarvers, and our second Desktop went to the son of a fifth generation Acadian master carver, so he had plenty of Basswood scraps to play with...he must never have hit the right settings.
Just goes to show I should only give personal experience advise
That size..if you can find a mill, it may very well be in their "Scrap" pile:)
Beautiful detail!!
Thanks Don.

Re: A picture and a question ?
I bought a couple of the basswood pieces off Amazon for a couple Christmas gifts. They were fine by themselves, and much cheaper than you will find at Michael's for sure (I think it was even the same brand). But I was warned correctly about the "fuzzies". I was not pleased with the outcome, although the recipients loved them. I will not bother with it again. I would certainly try to find something better. You just have to look around. You may have to drive a bit. I have nothing local and have to date driven 3 hours each way to secure some wood. My "local" go to lumber yard is an hour away. I have found nice, and inexpensive, wood on Craigs List. I'm sure I'll end up driving farther if there is a good enough reason. Shipping on wood is expensive, trying to find somewhat locally is usually much more efficient. I find it difficult to imagine in the Northwest and Seattle in particular you can't find anything. Dig around and something will turn up.
