3D Model cutting differently than preview

Post by llwood »

I purchased a 3D lighthouse model from Design and Make: https://store.designandmake.com/shop/product/8890

In all the previews, it it shown with straight sides. If shown double-sided, it would be roughly hexagonal.

However, when I actually cut the piece, the sides are curved. The picture shows the comparison between the preview and the cut piece. After having cut the piece several times, this happens consistently.

Any idea why the result in wood doesn't match the preview? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy

Have you run the finishing toolpath? It looks very rough.

Yes, both the roughing and finishing toolpaths.

In this case, the finish pass was cut using a 1/8" tapered ball nose. The result was the same when cut with a 0.03" engraving bit.

Perhaps it will be less "rough" when cut with a smaller bit, but I don't see any evidence that the shape will be any different.

Since your file contains a Design & Make copyright model, I think you may want to contact and/or send your file to Design & Make so they can peek at your overall layout and toolpath settings. I'm sure it's nothing to do with the model itself.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will do so.

I'd try cutting it at half speed and see if it's better. My guess is that CV mode is causing it to round over the details.
